Nate postpones homecoming dance to Nov. 4

This is the first in a series of articles that the Halo will post on the web each Monday. We hope you check this space weekly to find out what’s happening in our community.

Homecoming week at St. Martin’s Episcopal School consists of decorations, themed costume days, a pep rally, a football game, and a dance. This year, Hurricane Nate caused the homecoming dance to be moved a month away from all of the other festivities.

Students began to realize on Oct. 5 that Nate may interfere with homecoming, which especially worried the court, including Junior Olivia Ernst and Senior Grayson Doyle.

“I had to reschedule my appointments for hair and makeup, and sometimes they’ll have booked up slots for weddings,” Ernst said.

“We had to call last minute, but they were very accommodating,” Doyle said. “They’re letting us keep the tuxes for the month, free of charge.”

The faculty had to make a timely decision to notify the students about the change in the date of the dance. On Oct. 5, Head of Upper School Kevin Weatherill issued the first change: He pushed the dance to an earlier time on the scheduled day.

“The administration team got together and discussed what we knew Thursday afternoon,” Weatherill said. “At that point, the information we had gotten from The Weather Channel and other credible news sources was that the storm was going to come through early Sunday, so I thought if we could move it up a bit, we could still get the dance in.”

On Oct. 6, Weatherill sent out another email, this time moving the dance to Nov. 4. This later date was necessary because cross-country and volleyball were traveling the next two weekends, and Voodoo Music + Arts Experience was scheduled for the following weekend, according to Weatherill.

The homecoming dance is now scheduled for Nov. 4 at 9:00 p.m., and the freshman mixer in the Peyton Center will take place from 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
